Cacao butter option: Cacao butter can be substituted as the base — because it is denser than palm oil, you will need less of it. The exact amount requires some experimentation; I have not yet landed on a precise ratio. If you go this route, always verify your cacao butter is tested free of heavy metals.
Step by step instructions
- 1Sterilize all equipment — glass pot, beaker or glass cup, dropper, small ramekin, and any utensils. Remove palm oil from any plastic container and transfer to glass before use.
- 2Gently melt palm oil in your glass pot over low heat. Do not overheat — you want it liquid but not hot.
- 3Pour melted palm oil into your glass beaker or cup and set aside.
- 4Place your small ramekin on the gram scale and hit tare to zero it out. Carefully weigh out 4.8 grams of melatonin powder.
- 5Add the melatonin powder to the warm palm oil. Mix vigorously until fully and evenly incorporated — no powder clumps.
- 6Working quickly, use the dropper from your suppository kit to fill each mold. Re-mix the liquid between fills to keep the melatonin evenly distributed.
- 7Place filled molds on a flat plate and set on a flat surface in the freezer. Allow to solidify for a few hours.
- 8Once solid, pop out and store in a sealed glass container in the freezer. Use one suppository in the evening before bed.
Tip: Speed matters during the filling step — palm oil begins to solidify as it cools. Have your molds ready and dropper primed before you begin filling.
